University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee alumna Amanda Evora has been chosen to compete on the CBC’s (Canadian Broadcast Company) ‘Battle of the Blades’ which premiered September 22.

“I am excited and honored to be part of the ‘Battle of the Blades’ family,” Evora said.

Evora is a retired professional figure skater who appeared in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Evora was a two-time United States Pairs Silver Medalist in 2009 and 2010 and a Bronze Medalist in 2011.

The USFSM alumna will be paired with former National Hockey League player Scott Thornton. Thornton, a former first round pick, spent 18 seasons in the NHL and appeared in over 1000 games with six different franchises. Thornton has traded in his hockey stick for a much more elegant outfit as he learns the art of figure skating from Evora.

“We are very much alike. We are both hard-workers. He is methodical. He has had moments where he has had to step back and take his time, but I am very patient with him. I couldn’t ask for a better partner,” Evora said.

This season is the fourth in the history of ‘Battle of the Blades,’ which has a similar dynamic to America’s ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ Professional figure skaters and NHL players team up to battle for the right to be called ‘Battle of the Blades’ Champions.

“My first goal is that I want to be the best partner that I can be,” Evora said. “My second goal is that I want to win. Who doesn’t come in wanting to win? We all come in here, and we are all competitors and we all want the title of ‘Battle of the Blades’ Champion.”

Evora graduated from USF SM in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and lives and works in Sarasota. Evora also teaches figure skating part time in Ellenton, Fla.

“Being an Olympic year, it seems like people are excited to see winter sports again and to watch figure skating and hockey, so I was excited to be a part of it too.”

‘Battle of the Blades’ airs every Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBC. For more information on the show, and to see a full list of participants, visit the ‘Battle of the Blades’ website.
