The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee announces the appointment of Dr. Cihan Cobanoglu as the interim Dean of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management (SHRM). Dr. Cobanoglu is an internationally recognized researcher in hospitality information technology, the holder of twelve research awards, and the author of thirty-six refereed papers and six books. He also serves on the Advisory Board for President Obama’s National Strategy for Secure Online Transactions Act. He will assume his new post at USF Sarasota-Manatee on August 7th.
“Dr. Cobanoglu brought impeccable scholarly credentials to USF Sarasota-Manatee in 2010 when he joined the SHRM faculty,” said Dr. Arthur Guilford, Regional Chancellor for USF Sarasota-Manatee. “In his dean’s role, he will be a strong academic and visionary leader who will work to take the SHRM to the next level.”
Dr. Cobanoglu will be replacing SHRM’s Founding Dean, Dr. Jay Schrock, who helped to start the program in 2002. Under his leadership, the SHRM has awarded 86 bachelor’s degrees and now enrolls over 100 students annually. Dr. Schrock also led the SHRM’s establishment of a master’s degree in hospitality, which will enroll its first graduate students in Fall Semester 2011. Having accomplished these significant contributions for the SHRM, Dr. Schrock has decided to step down as Dean. Following his academic sabbatical in Europe during the 2011-12 academic year, Dr. Schrock will continue as a full professor.
Dr. Cobanoglu earned both his master’s and Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University and served as a tenured faculty member at the University of Delaware with appointments in Hotel, Restaurant, & Institutional Management and Accounting/ Management Information Systems (MIS).
Dr. Cobanoglu is a Certified Hospitality Technology Professional (CHTP), commissioned by the Hospitality Financial & Technology Professionals (HFTP) and the Educational Institute of American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA). He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology and Internet Editor of the International Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Administration. He was Chair of AHLA’s Technology and E-Business Committee and served as a member of the HFTP’s Board of Directors, the CHTP Advisory Council, the Editorial Advisory Board of HFTP, and the Hospitality Technology Magazine Board. He also served as an editorial board member of the following publications: International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, International Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Administration, Journal of Hospitality Marketing and Management, and Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education. In addition, Dr. Cobanoglu serves the industry as a consultant.
Dr. Cobanoglu’s research involves the use and impact of technology in the hospitality industry. He writes the “Last Words” column for Hospitality Technology Magazine. National and international media outlets, such as the BBC, NBC, ABC, CN8, Futurist Magazine, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, and Lodging Magazine, have featured his work. Dr. Cobanoglu has published in other scholarly journals within the field, such as the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, the Journal of Information Technology in Hospitality, the International Journal of Hospitality Management, and the International Journal of Market Research. Other researchers have cited his work in over 400 refereed journal articles. He has also made more than 200 presentations at national and international conferences.
